How Important Is Steady Metabolism To Weight Loss?

When you see a title like that, you must be wondering what exactly is steady metabolism? Well, I don’t blame you. Six months ago, I was as ignorant as you about this topic.

I’ll try to explain things in simple terms. Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself. You can be sleeping, working out, or even eating. All the while, your body is burning calories while you are engaged in these activities.

It is important to know that your body composition (muscle vs fat) affects your metabolism rate. Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. Therefore, muscular people have a higher metabolism than less muscular people.

In general, people who exercise regularly have higher metabolism as they use more calories to sustain the body.

So, where does steady metabolism come into the equation? If you have a more steady and consistent metabolism, you will experience less fluctuations and inconsistencies throughout your weight loss process. What this means is that you will not experience wild changes in your body weight, e.g. losing 5 lbs today and gaining 7 lbs the next month.

If you are looking for a weight loss program, make sure to find one where it accomplishes this consistent metabolism. A good weight loss program that gives you steady metabolism should have:

1. A program where it encourages consistent meals at regular intervals throughout the day. This makes sure that your body doesn’t have to process vastly different amount of food at any given time.

2. A healthy diet. A healthy diet is based around lots of vegetables and fresh fruits, lean protein and whole grains. To maintain your metabolism rate, having 4 to 6 small meals a day is recommended as opposed to the normal 3 meals a day routine. It is important to note that a healthy diet does not preclude “unhealthy” or junk foods. The only condition is that foods that are sweet and contain high fat junk are eaten less often and in smaller quantities, but they are by no means off limit.

3. Incorporates regular and light exercises. Not everyone is like Usain Bolt or some marathon runner running miles at once. Therefore a good weight loss program should have this program as part of the system.

So the next time you enroll in a weight loss program, make sure they have all these incorporated into the program.
